All Italian townships and the Ministry of Interior maintain an active registry of Italian Citizens Residing Abroad (AIRE).
Under Law n.470 of 27 October 1988, Italian citizens who depart and remain outside the territory for a continuous period of 12 months or more are required, within 90 days from the date of departure from Italian territory, to register with the Italian Consular Office that has jurisdiction over their locality of residence.
The downloadable form must be completed and signed by all Italian citizens who reside outside of Italy for more than one year
Please be advised that B1-B2 visitor visas do not give legal residence or employment status in the United States and will not be accepted for AIRE registration.
You are required to update your AIRE registration in any of the following cases:
1. Change of domicile or residence abroad;
2. Change of personal status (marriage, divorce, or death of spouse);
3. Change of employment or educational status.
Registration entitles Italian citizens to certain consular services provided only to AIRE registrants (including family status, domicile, citizenship, and military draft certifications).
